Over the past year, several local Scouts have generously supported W-L Crew as part of their journey toward earning the rank of Eagle Scout. These impressive young leaders devoted their time, skill, and energy to improvement projects at our Columbia Island Marina (CIM) boatyard, and our team is deeply grateful.
Their contributions have already made a visible difference. Tony Madigan, a Wakefield student and accomplished Potomac Boat Club sculler who became an honorary member of the W-L family during his sophomore year, designed and built a sturdy bag rack for our rowers’ backpacks. The rack is a perfect addition to CIM and is portable enough to serve us well at away regattas.
Charlie Kunze, a sophomore Scout and member of our Varsity crew team, led fellow troop members in a major infrastructure project at CIM. Together, they trenched the ground to bring permanent electrical power to W-L’s shipping container. Thanks to their work, our boatyard now has reliable interior and exterior lighting and charging capability. The Scouts then restored the work area with fresh gravel and constructed an additional boat rack to house our singles and doubles.
These projects do more than improve our space—they strengthen the daily experience of every athlete who trains at CIM and demonstrate the power of service, leadership, and community. We are proud to be the beneficiaries of their hard work and even prouder to count these Scouts among our extended W-L Crew family. Thank you to the Scouts and troop leaders whose dedication will support our rowers for seasons to come.
