It is with deep sadness and profound gratitude that we remember Paul Yager—a founding member of W-L Crew, captain of the 1950 Varsity 8, and a lifelong steward of our program and the greater rowing community. Paul passed away on September 11, 2025, leaving behind a legacy that has shaped generations of rowers at W-L, Potomac Boat Club, and beyond.
Paul’s contributions to our team go back to its very beginning. As a member of the original W-L crew, Paul helped lead the team to victory at the Schoolboy Nationals—a crowning achievement in the early days of the team’s existence. It was the kind of Cinderella story that still inspires our athletes today. That victory marked not only a triumph on the water but also the start of a tradition of excellence and grit that continues to define W-L Crew.
Paul’s connection to W-L ran even deeper: his father taught mechanical drawing and shop at the school from 1938 to 1964, and Paul himself was a member of the Cadet Corps, rising to the rank of Major in 1950. His discipline and leadership extended far beyond the classroom and boathouse, and it was no surprise that he became one of Coach Charlie Butt’s most trusted athletes and friends.
Long after his own rowing days, Paul remained a steadfast supporter of W-L Crew. He returned to help coach the team alongside Charlie Butt, even while continuing to train and compete at the national level. As an alumnus, he was tireless in his efforts to ensure the next generation had the boats, oars, and equipment they needed to succeed. His leadership helped secure vital resources for the team—efforts that many rowers may never know were made possible because of Paul.
Paul was also a cornerstone of Potomac Boat Club, where he served as president and helped shape the club into the thriving community it is today. His vision and hard work led to lasting improvements, including the establishment of boat storage space under the aqueduct—a small detail with a big impact that many benefit from to this day.
Above all, Paul Yager was known for his generous heart, booming laugh, and unwavering love for the sport of rowing. He embodied the spirit of camaraderie and determination that make our community so special. He lived the values we aspire to every day: dedication, teamwork, and a belief in something bigger than oneself.
In recognition of his extraordinary efforts, W-L Crew named a racing shell after Paul a few years ago. That boat—the Paul Yager—carried our Boys 3V8 to a 2nd place finish at the Virginia State Rowing Championship this past May. We are honored to continue carrying Paul’s name forward on the water and in our hearts.
In lieu of flowers, the Yager family has graciously requested that donations be made to W-L Crew. To honor Paul’s memory and support the next generation of rowers, please visit our Donate page.
