An Update from Head Coach Kara McPhillips
It’s been an exciting and groundbreaking few months for our athletes and coaches. After wrapping up winter conditioning, we launched our first boats from W-L Crew’s new home—Columbia Island Marina (CIM)—which has proven to be a wonderful basecamp for our storied team. The marina slip holders have been very welcoming (and curious about rowing!), and our athletes are settling in nicely to our new surroundings. We’ve also learned that the Pentagon Lagoon is a great place for novices to learn the sport of rowing. In fact, I hope to share details soon on some rowing camps we will host at CIM this summer.
On the racing front, we’ve had a very good start to the season. We raced 11 eights at St. Andrews and 10 boats at the Darrell Winslow Regatta, with a number of 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place finishes. We also had a successful showing at the Ted Phoenix Regatta. Please check out our team calendar to learn about our upcoming races and opportunities to cheer us on!
Speaking of, our marquee Charlie Butt Regatta will take place April 26 along the Georgetown waterfront. Families, friends, and alumni are invited to watch the races with us from the banks of Washington Harbor, and then follow us to CIM for a celebratory cookout. We hope to see you there.
The W-L Crew community continues to inspire us each and every day. Thank you for being a part of it!
Sincerely,
Kara McPhillips
