The Charlie Butt Regatta is a Virginia Scholastic Rowing Association (VASRA) Regatta held annually on the Potomac in honor of legendary coach Charlie Butt. Charlie founded Washington-Lee High School’s Crew program in 1949, coached our team for 41 years and helped to organize many of the rowing programs in our area. This is our only home regatta of the season, so we hope parents and families can attend and participate.
For this special day, W-L Boosters will set up at PBC, where we can host alumni, families and friends for a barbecue while we watch the race from the beautifully restored porch of the boathouse. Other participating high school crew teams will have their tents closer to Washington Harbor and Thompson’s Boat Club.
April 30, 2016
Potomac Boathouse, 3530 Water Street, N.W., Washington, DC
The regatta starts at 8:00 AM and will end around 3:30PM. Coxswains should arrive at PBC no later than 6:00 am if you wish to ride to TBC for the coxswain meeting. You may also choose to meet directly at the TBC flag pole no later than 6:15 am to be accounted for and readied to race.
Rowers should arrive 2 hours prior to their scheduled race for final preparations before racing.
Buses will not be available for this race. Rowers need to be dropped off and picked up at PBC. There will be no transport to or from W-L. It is a good idea to plan ahead to arrange a carpool to take your rower(s) down to PBC. Drivers who wish to avoid Georgetown traffic might consider dropping off their rowers at the Key Bridge Marriott, but walkers should travel in pairs.
Potomac Boat Club is located at 3530 Water Street, N.W., Washington, DC 20007. There is typically very limited parking outside of the boathouse, and the spots just in front of the building are reserved for senior PBC members at all times. On regatta day parking will become increasingly difficult in the area, so allow plenty of time to find a space or consider walking across Key Bridge from the Key Bridge Marriott which has a garage where you can park for about $20 a day (ask your rower how they cross the bridge and where to find the stairs that will take you directly to the PBC). There is also street parking right next to the biking trail that leads down to the Marriott and to Key Bridge
There is also a public garage 2-3 blocks down from PBC on Water Street.
Boats start upstream on the Potomac from PBC, pass under the Key Bridge at about half-way, finish near Washington Harbor and Thompson Boat House. Many W-L parents cheer from PBC as the boats pass by the boathouse and go under the Key Bridge, but to view the finish it’s best to watch from Georgetown waterfront park.

This is one of the two regattas for which the boosters organize food for the day for rowers and parents and guests. We’ll have breakfast treats and then a barbecue at lunch time. Rowers’ families are all welcome, and we’re expecting alumni as well, but we need a headcount as soon as possible.
Use this link to let us know how many people from your family will attend, and what your preferences are for the grill:
The Booster organization will supply burgers, chicken and hotdogs, but we need contributions of drinks, sides and desserts as well as workers for the day. Sign up to bring food and/or to help out here:
Race t-shirts are usually for sale by Thompson Boat House (where the finish line is) or there may be a shirt vendor walking around the event. Bring cash or check. Proceeds support VASRA.
Clear the dock – please keep the docks and boat storage area clear during the regatta. Rowers don’t need to trip over parents while launching.
No Pets – Due to the expected crowds, food and grilling, no dogs at this regatta please.
