As a member of the Washington-Lee Crew team you have an obligation to raise $400 as a returning rower, and $100 if you are a novice (this is your first year on the team).
In addition to the requirement to meet your fundraising total, there are additional required activities. First, all rowers are REQUIRED to attend a letter stuffing in January. Second, rowers and one parent are REQUIRED to be present on mulch delivery day (generally the first Saturday in March). Rowers are required to work from 7:30 am until all mulch is delivered. Parents need to volunteer for a morning or afternoon shift for Mulch Madness.
You have a number of opportunities for fulfilling your fundraising requirements.
- Wreath Sales in November/December.
- Friends and Family Appeal – a form letter available to rowers send to friends and families informing them about the team and inviting them to support you and W-L Crew with a donation.
- Mulch sales – we sell mulch in January and February, deliver in March (Mulch Madness, above).
- Solicit Direct Donations.
- Car wash.
This minimal fundraising requirement is necessary for the team’s operations, and is mandatory for all rowers. Our experience has been that every rower can easily satisfy this requirement with modest effort. If, however, a rower does not satisfy his or her fundraising requirement by the conclusion of Mulch Madness, rowers and parents must, as a condition to remaining on the team, themselves cover any shortfall. (And remember, this is separate from dues!)
If you have any questions please feel free to contact the head of fundraising. See Contacts.
Boat Naming. Washington-Lee Crew and the Boosters welcome contributions that will help us to purchase new boats. Equipment is by far the largest expense category of the team. Without outside contributions, W-L Crew would not be able to buy new shells and keep our team at its fastest. In recognition of large contributions to fund the purchase of a shell (typically two-thirds of the cost of the shell), W-L Crew and the Boosters will grant boat naming privileges to the donor, subject to final approval by the W-L Crew Boosters Executive Board, in consultation with the coaches. The W-L tradition is to name boats after individuals or groups strongly identified with W-L Crew or Washington-Lee High School (e.g., past W-L Crew coaches, rowers, parents, other supporters of W-L Crew, “Class of 1960”). Names of companies and other organizations not directly related to W-L Crew will also be considered. A boat will retain its name for as long as it is part of the W-L Crew inventory.
